The two cookies Pencil sets, and what each one is for.
Version 2026-08 · Last updated 24 August 2026
A cookie is a small text file a website stores in your browser. It lets the site recognise your browser between requests — which is what makes it possible to stay signed in rather than re-entering your password on every page.
Pencil uses two cookies. Both are strictly necessary for the platform to function, and neither is used to track you.
Identifies your signed-in session so the platform knows who you are between requests. Set when you sign in and cleared when you sign out. It is marked HttpOnly, so it cannot be read by scripts running in the page, and it contains an opaque identifier rather than any personal data.
Protects against cross-site request forgery, by letting the platform confirm that an action you appear to have taken really came from you and not from another site acting in your name. It must be readable by the page in order to work, and it carries no personal data.
Pencil carries no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and no third-party tag manager, session recorder or marketing pixel. We do not build a profile of you, and we do not share cookie data with advertisers.
Because both cookies we set are strictly necessary to deliver a service you have asked for, we do not show a cookie consent banner. If we ever introduce a cookie that is not strictly necessary, we will ask for your consent before setting it.
You can delete or block cookies through your browser settings. Blocking the two cookies above will prevent you from signing in, because the platform will have no way to recognise your session or verify your actions.
We will update this page if the cookies we use change. The version and date at the top tell you which version you are reading.
